Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church broke ground on a 61-unit senior apartment complex that will be part of the existing senior housing community at its 10-acre Cardiff campus.<\/p>\n

The project expands the church\u2019s 30\u2011unit senior housing community by adding three buildings, which will include 40 one\u2011bedroom and 21 two\u2011bedroom units, along with features such as elevators, wellness walk, lounges and dining areas along with a bocce ball court. Twelve of the new units will be specifically for affordable housing.<\/p>\n

The project will be built by San Diego-based Wermers Multi-Family Corporation. Completion is expected in 2028. Sunrise Management is slated to continue to manage the existing 30 apartments as well as the new units.<\/p>\n

The expansion project was deemed to be in line with the Affordable Housing on Faith and Higher Education Lands Act, (Senate Bill 4), which streamlines the permitting process for the development of affordable housing on land owned by faith-based institutions and nonprofit colleges. The Bill is also known as \u201cYIGBY\u201d for Yes in God\u2019s Backyard.<\/p>\n

The May 18 groundbreaking ceremony at 3459 Manchester Ave. drew area leaders, including State Senator Catherine Blakespear, Encinitas Mayor Bruce Ehlers and City of Encinitas Planning Manager Patty Anders along with clergy and community partners.<\/p>\n

The 2.5-acre construction site was blessed with holy water and basil by His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco, who oversees Greek Orthodox parishes in California as well as Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.<\/p>\n

Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church has been serving San Diego County for more than 45 years. The church\u2019s annual Cardiff Greek Festival draws thousands to its campus in September.<\/p>\n
