San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones, a Republican, held a solid lead for the District 5 seat on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, according to early primary results released Tuesday by the Registrar of Votes.<\/p>\n

Kyle Krahel, a Democrat, held a slight edge over Republican John Franklin for the second spot, meaning ballots yet to be counted may determine whether Krahel or Franklin goes on to the general election in November.<\/p>\n

Also running in the primary election, and several thousand votes behind the leaders, are Norma Contreras, a Democrat and former chair of the La Jolla Band of Luiseno Indians; and Sasha Miller, an independent endorsed by the Green Party.<\/p>\n

The top two vote-getters Tuesday regardless of their political party will advance to the November general election.<\/p>\n

Franklin, the mayor of Vista, received the most money of the five candidates in campaign contributions through May 16 of this calendar year, according to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters Office. Franklin had $94,632, followed by Jones with $45,955, Krahel with $38,959, Miller with $8,250 and Contreras with $230.<\/p>\n

District 5 covers a large territory of North County, much of it rural and unincorporated, from Oceanside and Camp Pendleton east through Borrego Springs and the Anza Borrego desert. A majority of its residents were registered Republicans for many years; however, today, Democrats hold a single-digit advantage.<\/p>\n

Supervisor Jim Desmond, a Republican, can\u2019t seek another four years in the job because of term limits. He is running for the 48th Congressional District position held by Rep. Darrell Issa, who did not file for re-election.<\/p>\n

The office of county supervisor is nonpartisan, but Democrats hold three of the five seats and often vote together on important decisions. A win by Krahel would further solidify their majority.<\/p>\n

Supervisorial District 4 has only two candidates this year, so both automatically advance to the November election.<\/p>\n

Incumbent District 4 Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe was elected to her first term on the board in November 2022 after former Supervisor Nathan Fletcher resigned in May of 2022 in the face of a lawsuit accusing him of sexual misconduct. Montgomery Steppe\u2019s only opponent this year is former La Mesa Councilmember Kristine Alessio.<\/p>\n

According to the registrar of voters\u2019 online records, Montgomery Steppe had received $66,728 in campaign contributions through May 16. As of Monday, Alessio listed only a single campaign contribution of $4,000 from the Republican Party of San Diego County.<\/p>\n

Treasurer-tax collector is the only countywide elected position on Tuesday\u2019s ballot. The office takes in about $9 billion in property taxes every year, about 20% of all the county\u2019s revenue.<\/p>\n

Larry Cohen held a solid lead in the early results for the treasurer position. A Democrat and longtime congressional aide, Cohen was appointed last year to serve out the rest of term formerly held by Dan McAllister.<\/p>\n

Shirley Nakawatase, a Republican, accountant and former Imperial Beach mayoral candidate, was in second place and appeared likely to be on the November ballot.<\/p>\n

The other two candidates are Republican Supervisor Joel Anderson and former Oceanside City Treasurer Victor Roy.<\/p>\n

Anderson was re-elected to a second supervisor term in 2024 and cannot run again for the board in 2028 because of term limits.<\/p>\n

Cohen led the four candidates in fundraising, according to the Registrar of Voters, with $164,536 received this calendar year through May 16.<\/p>\n

In the same time period, Nakawatase raised $68,284, while Anderson raised $51,210 and Roy received $30,000.<\/p>\n

Dan McAllister, first elected in 2002, held the office until he retired last August. He died a little over four months later after what his family described as a lingering illness.<\/p>\n
