It creates a fire-prone path that lines nearby residential neighborhoods and businesses across the city.<\/p>\n<p>A $7.2 million Federal Emergency Management Agency grant will spearhead wildlife risk reduction efforts in the corridor, once approvals are complete.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, Santee Fire Department Chief Harvey Wallace said the recent fire only underscored the need for continued proactive measures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the fire burned to the north on the river bottom and hit that defensible space, the fire intensity slowed significantly,\u201d Wallace said. \u201cHaving those areas maintained has really helped mitigate that threat as the fire approached those communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the past five years, city leaders have approved annual emergency declarations permitting staff to maintain fire hazards in 10 defensible space zones along the riverbed.<\/p>\n<p>Santee officials and leaders have long attributed many fires in the area to individuals living in homeless encampments.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In 2023, the city began issuing citations to anyone found along the corridor with fire-starting equipment, trash that threatened local habitats or camping gear affecting the flow of water.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/losangelesmovinginsider.com\/index.php\/2026\/06\/07\/san-diego-is-wrapping-up-a-uniquely-tough-budget-season-what-will-it-cut-and-what-will-it-save\/\">San Diego is wrapping up a uniquely tough budget season. What will it cut, and what will it save?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the time, officials stressed that the ordinance was not aimed at homeless individuals, but anyone who could create fire risk. However, the ordinance specifically banned \u201ccamping\u201d along the river \u201cwhile using or possessing a Competent Ignition Source.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a proactive effort to further monitor fire-prone areas, the Santee City Council amended an agreement with the San Diego County Sheriff\u2019s Office on May 13 to allow the addition of 17 surveillance cameras at parks, trails and preserves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the things we did was look at our fire frequency and how to maximize some of those cameras to put them in areas where we were seeing frequent fires,\u201d Wallace said. \u201cI do believe that\u2019s going to help with the investigation of these incidents.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A draft environmental impact report for the hazard mitigation program is available for public review and comment as staff work toward obtaining the necessary approvals for the second phase of the grant, which will provide $6.6 million for the bulk of mitigation efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The public comment period closes on June 22 and the City Council is tentatively scheduled to review the report during a regular meeting on Aug. 12.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, the FEMA review periods are estimated to take a minimum of one year,\u201d Wallace said.<\/p>\n<p>Once the fuel treatment plan is approved, the final phase of the project will focus on removal of highly flammable invasive brush, dead vegetation and continued maintenance of defensible space across the river corridor.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/losangelesmovinginsider.com\/index.php\/2026\/06\/07\/michael-smolens-jim-desmonds-challenge\/\">Michael Smolens: Jim Desmond\u2019s challenge<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>City added surveillance cameras in parks, trails and preserves to boost safety efforts while pushing forward with a FEMA-funded wildfire mitigation project<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":2293,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-2294","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
