(150 words max)

What truly sets me apart from other candidates is that I am not a career politician. I have no intentions of making politics a career. Unless my constituents express a need for me to stay in politics. My goal is to encourage more people to run for office and end the idea that politics should be a career.

My campaign is all about average people running for office. Average people typically live life the same way a majority of people live their life, and therefore have a better connection to the public and what the public is having to deal with on a daily basis.

I am a highly effective person. By that I mean I make it a point to synergize with as many people as I can in order to create solutions that work for all stakeholders.

2) What are the top 3 issues facing this district? (150 words max)

First, public safety and quality of life. We have a crisis right now with people living on the streets. We should put real care into people rather than brushing the issues under the rug with temporary solutions.

Second, higher taxes/fees, as well as the rising cost of living. California has one of the highest costs of living in the country as well as the highest tax rates. We have to get our state spending under control and stop spending money on projects that never seem to get finished.

Finally, we have an education system that is not producing students ready for life. Some districts are graduating students well below the standard reading level we expect. Math and basic English scores are well below grade level. We have to focus on our students and give them the tools to achieve their dreams.

3) What are the first 3 things you would do in office if elected? (150 words max)

First, will introduce a bill to ban registered sex offenders from holding office in California and ban them from running for office in the first place. Sex offenders, no matter the level of the offense, do not represent the people of California.

Second, I will introduce a bill to immediately suspend the gas tax. This will give immediate relief to all Californians at the gas pump, reducing their cost of living. It is getting harder every day for Californians to go to work and home. Everything we buy in the stores comes to us by vehicle. Cutting the gas tax would greatly reduce the rising costs of living for all Californians immediately.

Finally, I will introduce legislation banning a commission from enacting policies, fees and red tape without the consent of the people. I will include in this legislation the requirement that the state legislation must approve the appointments to all state commissions.

4) What should California do to solve its shortage of affordable housing and curb homelessness? Which existing efforts do you believe are working, and which aren’t? (150 words max)

My first point to reduce homelessness and increase housing is to reduce the bureaucracy and fees associated with homebuilding. This will ease the burden on the builders and allow all their homes to be more affordable.

But one of the best local models I have seen that directly addressed the homelessness crisis is the Chula Vista Village at Otay. It was built as temporary housing for the homeless and has helped both the city and the people it serves. The residents receive the support they need to move into permanent housing in a short period of time.

Many other programs have seen money thrown at them from Sacramento, with not the same positive results. I would like to see what programs other than Chula Vista’s have had definitive results and increase funding to them. Accountability and positive results should be the benchmark for annual funding allotments.

5) This district and its neighbors are vulnerable to climate change impacts like wildfires, rising seas and extreme heat, and to the health effects of climate-warming emissions. What should California do to improve climate resilience and reduce emissions and fire risk? (150 words max)

First, I believe in being a good steward of the environment. I would like to see more rewards, like a reduction in tax liabilities for businesses and people who participate in programs that benefit our beautiful landscape.

San Diego firefighters effectively eliminate fighting wildfires and encourage proactive prevention. Fire departments need to work together to find the best-case scenario for wildfire prevention and containment.

Climate change is a global issue. I will work to promote tax reductions and incentives for good stewardship principles. People, when given the option of doing what is right and receiving a financial benefit, will choose to work to save our planet.

6) Laws enshrined in California’s Constitution that protect residents from tax increases have also painted local governments into a corner as they seek to fund basic services and have led to chronic underfunding of schools. What would you do about this? For instance, would you support changes to Proposition 13 to remove its protections for commercial properties? (150 words)

I would not touch the protections that Proposition 13 gives.

I believe if the state mandates a service, they should also fund the service. The schools have been underfunded, in part, due to individual districts’ mismanagement and Sacramento’s theft of funds specifically earmarked for education. For example, the California Lottery was supposed to go to the schools. Historically, nothing from the lottery has gone to the schools.

Read more Q&A: Meet Mara Elliott, candidate for California State Senate District 40

Sacramento has not managed its revenues well either. I would support a complete audit of all projects and services to find any possible waste. I believe that the voters have lost faith in Sacramento, especially when it comes to spending, so as an Assembly member, I would like to regain that faith through a thorough audit.

7) In light of those constraints, along with federal funding cuts, how should California balance its budget and fund basic services? Where would you seek new revenues or savings? (150 words)

One of the most effective ways I can see immediately to get federal funding to return to the state is this:

California should stop resisting federal law. California law should be that, if someone is present unlawfully and is arrested for rape or murder or something completely egregious, then we should be calling Immigration to have this individual picked up. We should not allow these individuals to live in our communities.

Rather than resisting Title IX rules, we should be adults and recognize that boys are boys, and girls are girls, and no one can change their DNA. We need to stop ignoring the brave people coming forward to speak against transitioning because they went through the process and were lied to about the results of the transition.

8) Speaking of spending, Californians consistently rank the cost of living as a big concern. Recent jumps in the costs of fuel, food and other goods — combined with federal cuts to safety-net programs, new limits on certain federal loans and more — are further squeezing residents who were already struggling. What relief would you seek to offer, and how? (150 words max)

The price of gasoline is a determining factor in the increase in the cost of goods and services. Almost all products, including food and some services, rely on gasoline to get to the consumer. Californians, as of May 2026, pay between 18-20% in state taxes alone on gasoline.

This one factor greatly increases the cost of living for all Californians. I would begin by introducing short-term tax reductions on gasoline. This will provide a Band-Aid for Californians across the board, not solely at the pump.

I would also look at further long-term tax and red tape cuts that would assist Californians in regaining their financial foothold.

9) President Trump has made cracking down on immigration a cornerstone of his administration, ordering widespread arrests and detentions of immigrants nationwide and directing military resources to a new military zone along the U.S.-Mexico border. What impact have these actions had on this district? What are your goals on immigrants, immigration and the border, and how would you pursue them in the Legislature? What is your message to constituents who are immigrants? (150 words max)

Immigration is a federal policy. I am open to discussing options for people to get citizenship without creating a way for anyone to get in front of someone else taking the citizenship oath.

I want to see a comprehensive plan that gets people registered on a path to citizenship while still respecting the over 800,000 individuals who took the citizenship oath.

No one should just be given citizenship; there must be a path to citizenship that does not disrespect people who have participated in the process to become a citizen already.

10) Health care costs for many Californians are rising — some because of new federal eligibility requirements, some because of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s moves to limit Medi-Cal coverage for some immigrants. How would you rein in costs? Would you vote to reverse the governor’s cuts to immigrant health care coverage? (100 words max)

Medi-Cal is a benefit for low-income and permanently disabled Californians. I know Sacramento would love to fully fund Medi-Cal for everyone, but it currently has a $6.2 billion annual budget shortfall. That is not sustainable. Cuts need to be made, and immigrants are one of the groups.

As said previously, I do not believe in unfunded mandates, so I would be in favor of pressuring Congress to find funding to bridge the gap that Washington originated.

11) Among the many ballot measures being pursued by lawmakers and citizens for the November ballot are a handful that have drawn much attention and money. Should each of the below measures qualify for the November ballot, would you personally vote for measures that would do the following? (50 words max per measure)

— make ride-hail companies like Uber and Lyft liable for sexual assaults committed in cars?

A company should only be held accountable if they knowingly allow someone convicted or accused of sexual harassment to drive for them without any action. The majority of the accountability should be on the driver. Most of these companies do background checks and should take allegations seriously.

— require voters to provide a government-issued ID each time they vote?

I support voter ID. We should not accept government mail as a form of identification.
