LOS ANGELES (AP) \u2014 Ronnie Schell, who played the best friend to the title character on the 1960s sitcom \u201cGomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.\u201d and whose gradual ascendancy in show business earned him the title of \u201cAmerica\u2019s Slowest Rising Comedian,\u201d died Friday. He was 94.<\/p>\n

Schell died of natural causes at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. He had been hospitalized after a recent fall, according to publicist Harlan Boll, who spoke to Schell\u2019s son Gregory.<\/p>\n

Schell played Marine Pvt. Duke Slater opposite star Jim Nabors for three seasons on the popular CBS show.<\/p>\n

He left during the fourth season to star as a DJ in his own sitcom, \u201cGood Morning, World.\u201d But it flopped after 26 episodes, and Schell returned to \u201cGomer Pyle\u201d for its fifth and final season. By then, his character was promoted to corporal.<\/p>\n

Schell was tagged with the \u201cslowest rising\u201d label by San Francisco radio personality Don Sherwood.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was Sherwood who coined the phrase because everybody I worked with moved on ahead,\u201d Schell told The Mercury News in 2011, citing Phyllis Diller and the Smothers Brothers as newcomers who later hit it big.<\/p>\n

Schell\u2019s co-star on \u201cGood Morning, World\u201d was Goldie Hawn, who became a regular on \u201cRowan & Martin\u2019s Laugh-In\u201d and won a supporting actress Oscar in 1970.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always say it\u2019s been mighty lonely in the middle,\u201d he told the San Jose, California, newspaper.<\/p>\n

But Schell found steady work, and sometimes outlasted his contemporaries who scored early success and later stopped or were no longer around.<\/p>\n

Born Ronald Ralph Schell in Richmond, California, on Dec. 23, 1931, he joined the U.S. Air Force out of high school and served four years. He got into entertaining in the military and later at San Francisco State University, where he graduated in 1958.<\/p>\n

While appearing in a college play, he received an offer to appear for two weeks at San Francisco\u2019s Purple Onion comedy club, a booking that stretched to five months. Diller and the Kingston Trio shared the bill.<\/p>\n

The Kingston Trio hired him as an opening act for their nationwide college tour.<\/p>\n

Schell honed his comedy act at the famed hungry i nightclub in San Francisco, where Woody Allen and Mort Sahl got their starts. Schell performed his comedy act in Las Vegas for over 40 years.<\/p>\n

He worked as a writer and sketch performer for Sherwood\u2019s radio and television shows in the San Francisco Bay area.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t get the big break, but I got many little breaks,\u201d he told San Francisco State\u2019s online alumni spotlight.<\/p>\n

Schell appeared on a 1959 episode of the TV quiz show \u201cYou Bet Your Life,\u201d demonstrating a comic barrage of beatnik jive talk for host Groucho Marx.<\/p>\n

In 1962, he left the Bay Area for Los Angeles and two years later was hired for \u201cGomer Pyle.\u201d<\/p>\n

He had dozens of television guest credits, including \u201cThe Andy Griffith Show\u201d and \u201cThe Patty Duke Show,\u201d and in later years \u201cThe Love Boat,\u201d \u201cMork & Mindy,\u201d \u201cSaved by the Bell,\u201d \u201cThe Golden Girls,\u201d and \u201cYes, Dear.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schell was the voice for the hockey puck-shaped character on the \u201cPeter Puck\u201d cartoons, which aired during televised NHL games in the 1970s. In the 1980s, Schell appeared in television commercials for Shakey\u2019s Pizza.<\/p>\n

His more than 24 film roles included \u201cThe Shaggy D.A.,\u201d \u201cLove at First Bite\u201d and \u201cJetsons: The Movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

His extensive voice-over work included \u201cGoober and the Ghost Chasers,\u201d \u201cThe Skatebirds,\u201d \u201cBattle of the Planets\u201d and \u201cThe Smurfs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schell served as comedy adviser to actor Richard Dreyfuss in the 2019 Netflix film \u201cThe Last Laugh.\u201d<\/p>\n

He is survived by his wife Janet Rodeberg, sons Gregory and Christian, and granddaughter Chiara.<\/p>\n
