The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating Gov. Gavin Newsom and first partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, questioning people connected to them, the governor said Monday.<\/p>\n

Newsom, in a video message on Monday, June 15, accused President Donald Trump, long his political rival, of spurring the federal probe because Newsom is weighing a run for president in 2028.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn recent days, federal agents have knocked on the doors of family friends and former employees. Not because they found a crime. Because they are simply trying to find one,\u201d Newsom said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDonald Trump isn\u2019t just coming after me because of my mean tweets; he\u2019s coming after me because I am considering running for president,\u201d Newsom continued. \u201cBecause he hates that I\u2019ve consistently called him out over and over again for his lies and deceit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today, my wife & I joined Donald Trump\u2019s hit list. He has directed his Department of Justice to investigate us. They have not found a crime \u2013 they are simply trying to find one.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd just in the last week, I\u2019ve learned his campaign has reached my own home. To get me, he\u2019s coming after my wife, Jen,\u201d Newsom said.<\/p>\n

When reached on Monday, Brandon Richards, a spokesperson for the governor, pointed to a \u201cfact sheet\u201d that said federal agents have contacted individuals and organizations connected to the Newsoms and have subpoenaed records and conducted interviews \u201cspanning years of personal and professional activity.\u201d<\/p>\n

A White House spokesperson declined to comment, as did one for the Justice Department.<\/p>\n

But a source familiar with the matter said there are several investigations related to the Newsoms that have been ongoing for roughly a year. The person said these probes \u2014 one pertaining to Newsom\u2019s wife and her taxes, and another into his chief of staff \u2014 were started by federal agents in California, and called Newsom\u2019s assertion that they were pushed for by Trump \u201ccategorically false.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Trump and Newsom have long sparred, and the governor\u2019s social media accounts often take aim at the Republican president. Last year, the two went head-to-head over the deployment of National Guard troops and U.S. Marines in Southern California to manage protests and support federal immigration actions.<\/p>\n

And last year, Trump suggested Newsom should be arrested. \u201cI would do it,\u201d the president said when asked whether his border czar should arrest California\u2019s governor.<\/p>\n

Newsom, on Monday, said he is proudly joining Trump\u2019s \u201chit list.\u201d<\/p>\n
