He arrived in San Diego and became a darling of the Republican Party, a U.S. Marine who married a former adviser to President George W. Bush and enjoyed more promise than most politicians can dream about.<\/p>\n

Now, nearly two decades after Nathan Fletcher was first elected to the California Assembly, the former lawmaker and powerful chair of the county Board of Supervisors has issued a heartfelt goodbye to his adopted hometown.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery good book has chapters,\u201d Fletcher posted to social media Thursday night. \u201cSo does life. Some are exciting. Some are painful. Some are beautiful. Some are all of that rolled into one.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome end before you\u2019re ready and others linger longer than they should,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Fletcher, who divorced former Bush administration official Mindy Tucker and married then-state Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez, announced that he and his family were selling their home in City Heights and relocating to a community they declined to disclose.<\/p>\n

The announcement comes three years after Fletcher\u2019s political career was derailed by accusations from a Metropolitan Transit System public relations specialist that Fletcher sexually harassed and assaulted her twice during a non-consensual extra-marital affair.<\/p>\n

Fletcher immediately acknowledged an improper relationship with accuser Grecia Figueroa and issued a public apology to his wife, but he vehemently denied the allegations.<\/p>\n

As the civil lawsuit proceeded in court \u2013 and salacious texts between the plaintiff and defendant were placed into the public record \u2013 Fletcher prevailed in his defense. What began with multiple legal claims sputtered to withdrawals and then dismissals, but the political damage was done.<\/p>\n

Elected officials across San Diego County demanded accountability almost as soon as the allegations were leveled. Two of Fletcher\u2019s own staff members quit.<\/p>\n

Fletcher soon ended what had seemed like\u00a0a\u00a0shoo-in campaign for state Senate. He resigned his seats on the MTS board and county Board of Supervisors and entered a residential program to treat post-traumatic stress and alcohol abuse related to previous combat tours in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

Now 49, Fletcher emerged from his self-imposed exile last summer after a Superior Court judge dismissed Figueroa\u2019s claims against the supervisor and MTS. A defamation countersuit he filed against Figueroa is still pending, with a hearing scheduled next week.<\/p>\n

At his first press conference in two years, Fletcher appeared last September alongside his wife and said he had no plans to return to politics even though the civil lawsuit filed against him had been dismissed.<\/p>\n

Instead, he spoke about personal recovery, regrets for his behavior and the benefits of equine therapy, which he credited with helping him cope with alcoholism and trauma he experienced as a U.S. Marine.<\/p>\n

Fletcher did not walk away from politics altogether, however.<\/p>\n

State records show Fletcher launched Arrow Advisors in May 2025, a consultancy he opened at an address in Mulberry, Ark. Later last summer, Fletcher filed paperwork in Sacramento showing that he had registered as a lobbyist based in Southlake, Texas.<\/p>\n

In his farewell letter, Fletcher took pride in his public-service accomplishments such as authoring Chelsea\u2019s Law, which increased penalties for sexually violent predators in the wake of the horrific 2010 murder of Chelsea King.<\/p>\n

He also mentioned helping deported veterans return to the United States, guiding San Diego County through the COVID-19 pandemic and pushing to expand services for people who rely on public services.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m proud of the work and will carry a great sense of accomplishment for the things I got to be a part of,\u201d Fletcher wrote. \u201cSan Diego is a wonderful place and not just because of the weather or the natural beauty. It\u2019s wonderful because of the people who make it what it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fletcher began his political career as a Republican before becoming a registered Democrat. He twice ran unsuccessfully for San Diego mayor before winning election to the county board in 2018.<\/p>\n

Fletcher actually moved from San Diego months ago. He and Gonzalez both deliberately withheld any details about where they plan to live due to privacy considerations but indicated they would live in a small town. In a social media post of her own, Gonzalez said she would remain a resident of California.<\/p>\n

Even before he was accused of sexual misconduct, Fletcher and his wife experienced serious threats to their safety. In 2022, someone set fire to their home in the middle of the night. They awoke to smoke alarms at 4 a.m. and the family was able to escape unharmed.<\/p>\n

Gonzalez resigned from the state Assembly days before the arson attack to accept the top post at the California Labor Federation, the politically influential group that represents hundreds of thousands of workers across the state.<\/p>\n

Gonzalez said in her post the couple held onto their home while their youngest children completed their current school years. She too expressed mixed emotions about leaving the community where she was born and spent most of her life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve experienced more milestones in this region than I can count: births, deaths, marriages, divorces, elections, graduations, sicknesses, recoveries,\u201d she wrote. \u201cAlmost every memory of my life is attached to a place, a beach, a home, a union hall, a feeling that is uniquely San Diego.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gonzalez said she plans to remain in her job as leader of the state labor federation.<\/p>\n

In his public goodbye to his adopted hometown, Fletcher said life is not about holding onto the past \u2013 \u201cold chapters,\u201d as he put it \u2013 but rather about appreciating them, learning from them and having the courage to turn the page.<\/p>\n

\u201cI leave thankful for what San Diego gave me, what it taught me and the people I will remain close to forever,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is a place I love. It is a place I fit in. It\u2019s just not where I belong.\u201d<\/p>\n
