The stabbing was reported around 12:45 a.m. on West C Street between Union and Front streets, according to San Diego police acting homicide Lt. Joel Tien. Officers arrived to find the victim unresponsive and suffering from at least one stab wound.

The victim, described as a man in his 30s or 40s, was taken to a hospital, where he later died, Tien said. As of late Monday morning, police were working with the county Medical Examiner’s Office to identify the victim.

Tien said at least one nearby surveillance camera captured the attack — the area, which is near both the courthouse and several detention facilities, is heavily surveilled. The suspect was last seen heading east on C Street at Front Street. Police provided only a vague description of him as a man wearing dark clothing.

The area where the fatal attack occurred is near both Orange and Blue Line trolley tracks, and Tien said trolley service was temporarily restricted early in the morning but has since resumed. Officers continued blocking vehicle traffic in the area later Monday morning but opened pedestrian access to the courthouse, Tien said.

Homicide detectives were expected to be in the area throughout the day Monday searching for evidence and reviewing surveillance footage, Tien said. Anyone with information about the case was asked to contact the San Diego police homicide unit at 619-531-2293 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
