Officials said the pair were killed when the driver, for unknown reasons, drove into the median on westbound state Route 94, just east of Interstate 5 near downtown, shortly before 5:20 a.m. The sedan then left the freeway and slammed into a tree.

Paramedics responded, but both the driver and the passenger died before they could be taken to a hospital. A third passenger was taken to a hospital with major injuries, a California Highway Patrol spokesperson said.

The county Medical Examiner’s Office identified the driver as Brian Hernandez, 23, and the passenger as Felipe Elisea Lua, 41.
