Westbound Interstate 8 reopens after fatal crash near Lakeside

Two drivers suffered fatal injuries after their cars collided into another in a head-on crash in Lakeside late Thursday morning, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The crash occurred when a Toyota Rav 4 traveling east on Interstate 8 near Lake Jennings Park Road veered across the road, crossed over the center median and headed into oncoming traffic around 11 a.m., CHP officials said. The Toyota then slammed into the front of a westbound Honda Accord.

Wreckage and debris were scattered across the westbound lanes, and one vehicle reportedly landed on its roof.

The Toyota’s driver, a 24-year-old man from El Cajon, died at the scene. The Honda’s driver, a 43-year-old man from El Cajon, died at a hospital.

A stretch of westbound I-8 east of Lakeside was closed for about four hours, the CHP said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, but alcohol or drugs were determined not to be a factor, investigators said.
