Two motorists were killed Friday on Interstate 5 near San Diego International Airport in a predawn crash involving two SUVs, including one heading north on the southbound side of the freeway.

The deadly collision between a Honda CR-V and a Dodge Durango took place shortly before 3 a.m., just south of Laurel Street in the Little Italy area, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver of the Durango, a 56-year-old El Cajon man, died at the scene of the crash, the CHP reported. His name was withheld pending family notification.

Medics took the other motorist, 62-year-old Jesus Verduzco of Bonita, to UCSD Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a little more than an hour after the crash, according to the state agency and the Medical Examiner’s Office.
Though the Highway Patrol reported that one of the SUVs was traveling the wrong way at the time of the wreck, it remained unclear in the mid-afternoon which one it was.
