Southbound traffic at San Ysidro Port of Entry back open after protest in Tijuana

Southbound vehicle access into Tijuana at the San Diego Port of Entry was temporarily closed Thursday by a group of protesting teachers on the Mexican side of the border.

Southbound traffic on interstates 5 and 805 at the border was diverted to state Route 905 east toward the Otay Mesa Port of Entry.

The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert for the area shortly before 10:30 a.m. The protestors left the area around noon, and freeway access through the port was reopened shortly after.

A similar blockade occurred in the area on March 18, when a teachers’ union blocked southbound traffic to demand policy changes for better wages and pensions. The organizers had said the plan was to be on-site for three hours, but the group left after about an hour.
