Witnesses reported the man appeared to jump into the ocean from the end of the pier around 2:11 p.m. while fully clothed and wearing a backpack, according to the Oceanside Fire Department.

One lifeguard sprinted to the end of the pier, dove into the water and kept the victim afloat with a rescue buoy until more help arrived.

Then additional lifeguards on a watercraft, which was patrolling north of the pier, picked him up and took him to shore.

On the shore, paramedics gave him life support treatment. He was then taken to a hospital to be evaluated and treated.

“The rapid actions of the first-arriving lifeguard, combined with the immediate response of the personal watercraft operator and firefighter-paramedics on shore, were instrumental in bringing the victim safely from the water and ensuring he received timely medical care,” an Oceanside Fire official said in a statement.

Oceanside Fire did not immediately provide details of the victim’s age or injuries or how he ended up in the water.
