The suspected driver, Jose Christian Sanchez Linares, was arrested Tuesday and booked into the Vista jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, Escondido police said in a news release. Jail records show he remained in custody Wednesday morning and was slated to be arraigned in Vista Superior Court on Friday.

The collision occurred just after 8:30 p.m. Friday as the man illegally crossed Ninth Avenue just east of Redwood Street, Escondido police said. The pedestrian was taken to a hospital, where he died. Police identified him Wednesday as Freddie Olmeda, a 31-year-old resident of Escondido.

The vehicle believed to have struck Olmeda was found abandoned near the scene.

Police said a second vehicle also struck the victim as he lay in the roadway, and investigators later identified and spoke to the driver of that vehicle. “Based on his statement, evidence at the scene and video evidence, he was unaware that he had struck the victim. He faces no charges,” police said.
