A 19-year-old motorcyclist died early Monday in Scripps Ranch after crashing into the back of a vehicle whose driver allegedly fled the scene, San Diego police said.

It happened around 2:30 a.m. on Carroll Canyon Road as the rider was heading east between Interstate 15 and Scripps Ranch Boulevard, according to Officer Sarah Foster.
It was not immediately known what caused the crash, which investigators are treating as a hit-and-run collision, Foster said. Police did not provide any details about the other vehicle that allegedly left the scene.

A person who was not involved in the crash happened upon the downed motorcycle rider and called 911, Foster said. The teen died before officers arrived at the scene. His name was not released.
