A 48-year-old man died Thursday after he was transported from jail to the hospital to receive care for a pre-existing condition, sheriff’s officials said.

Travis Hughes was taken from Rock Mountain Detention Facility in Otay Mesa to a local hospital on May 20, sheriff’s homicide Lt. Juan Marquez said. Two weeks later, he was transferred to a second hospital where he received palliative care for a pre-existing medical condition.
On Thursday, sheriff’s officials were notified that Hughes had died at the hospital.
Hughes was arrested by the San Diego Police Department and facing charges of violation of parole, making criminal threats and providing false identification to a peace officer.

His next hearing was scheduled for June 25.
The sheriff’s homicide unit is investigating, as is standard for inmate deaths. It is also being reviewed by the Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board, the county’s civilian oversight body.
The county Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death.
