San Diego-based Lytx creates dashcams that ride shotgun in fleets of semis, delivery vans and waste trucks around the country. The dual-sided cameras watch both the driver and the road.

The device was created for driver safety. So if a trucker looks like they’re falling asleep during a long-haul trip, the camera sounds an alarm and alerts the company. The dashcam also serves as video evidence, protecting companies from illegitimate accident claims.
Using a combination of professional review and artificial intelligence, Lytx dashcams identify risky driving behaviors and the company aggregates them in an annual report.
In 2025, Lytx used its software to review 1.5 million videos from across San Diego County.

Every incident was scored for how dangerous it was, said Jonathan Hayft, senior manager of client intelligence at Lytx. The scores are based on what the driver was doing and whether there wasan actual crash, a near miss or just a close call. Then those scores get mapped to specific stretches of road so you can see exactly which spots have the most incidents.
