It’s the most convenient post office for the 74-year-old Mount Hope resident — and now that it’s closing, she’s disappointed that she’ll have to go to another. Many patrons are elderly, she said, and rely on it to stay connected.
“I’m not happy with that,” she said. “The community really needs this.”
The post office at 2777 Logan Ave. in Barrio Logan is set to close August 7, as the U.S. Postal Service says its lease is expiring. Customers’ service will be transferred to the Encanto post office, more than 4 miles away.
The closure comes just weeks after Sen. Alex Padilla and Rep. Juan Vargas introduced legislation to change the location’s name to honor the late education leader Armando Rodriguez.
Postal worker union leaders say the closure is the latest in a string of closures of post offices around the country after their leases expire. They point out that on top of providing vital communications for communities, post offices also offer notary services and money orders, and deliver many thousands of ballots in elections.
“We are one of the few public entities. Most businesses are private,” said Bob Waterhouse, the president of the San Diego Area Local 197 of the American Postal Workers Union. “The post office is one of those things that’s in everybody’s backyard.”
USPS spokesperson John Hyatt said the Barrio Logan office is closing because its lease is up. “The Postal Service is searching for alternate quarters to continue retail services in the area,” he said in a June press release.
The location’s 38 employees will be transferred to work out of the Encanto post office, he added.

In the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, 2025, a total of 76 post offices, stations and branches closed nationwide, according to data from a USPS annual review.
In the last six years, several post offices in San Diego County have been suspended, including in Sorrento Valley, Carmel Valley and University City. The Hillcrest post office is also scheduled to close next year. The post office says it is seeking other locations for them.
These suspensions can grow into years-long closures.
“They’re calling it a temporary closure to keep everybody kind of somewhat happy,” Waterhouse said.
“If you’re going to close this office down, you need to find another spot and open it up,” he added.
With the Barrio Logan post office’s closure, the legislation to rename it is no longer necessary, said spokespersons for Padilla and Vargas. Both said that when they proposed the bill, they didn’t know of the planned closure.
Since 2009, the building has been named for the late labor leader Cesar Chavez, whose name is now being removed from positions of honor across California after the New York Times reported allegations that he sexually abused young girls for years.
Rodriguez, the post office’s new would-be namesake, was born in 1921, grew up in Logan Heights and served briefly as a principal in San Diego Unified School District before moving on to work for the state Department of Education.
