A traffic collision Sunday night on a Carlsbad freeway off-ramp escalated into a fight and stabbing that left two people hospitalized and one in custody on suspicion of attempted murder, according to the California Highway Patrol.

It happened a little after 7 p.m. on the northbound Interstate 5 off-ramp to Tamarack Avenue, when two Chevrolet pickups collided, according to CHP Officer Jared Grieshaber.
A preliminary investigation determined that after the collision, a man who was driving one of the trucks allegedly attacked two people in the second truck, assaulting a 22-year-old woman and stabbing a 27-year-old man, Grieshaber said in a statement. The suspect then allegedly got back into his vehicle and fled the scene.
Emergency personnel transported both victims to a hospital, Grieshaber said. He did not provide details about the extent of their injuries.

Meanwhile, officers from CHP and multiple surrounding agencies searched for the attacker, Grieshaber said. Officers from the Oceanside Police Department eventually located the 49-year-old suspect and his truck and turned him over to CHP detectives, who arrested him on suspicion of attempted murder and assault.
Jail records showed the man was being held without bail at the Vista Detention Center on charges of attempted murder and battery causing serious bodily injury; he is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Vista Superior Court.
