Authorities identified an Alpine resident as the burglary suspect who was shot and killed by police officers last week after an hours-long SWAT standoff in the Point Loma area.

Erik Simon Sanders, 24, was fatally shot by officers after he came out of a Point Loma-area home on Nipoma Street allegedly holding a handgun.
The three San Diego Police Department officers who discharged their weapons were identified as Officers Christopher Lingenhol, David Speck and Jose Velasquez. Lingenhol, Speck and Velasquez and have been with the department 12 years, 30 years and nine years, respectively, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.
On the afternoon of Aug. 25, officers were sent to a home in the Loma Portal neighborhood for a welfare check that was later updated to a residential burglary in progress.

After contacting the homeowner, SWAT officers were sent to the home and tried to resolve the situation. Hours later, around 9:20 p.m., Sanders exited through the front door and was shot. Paramedics responded, but the man died before he could be taken to a hospital.
A firearm located next to Sanders was collected as evidence, the sheriff’s department said. No officers were injured during the incident.
The shooting remains under investigation by the sheriff’s homicide team as part of a countywide memorandum of understanding that ensures no department investigates its own officer-involved shootings.
