An 18-year-old man was killed early Wednesday when the SUV he was driving went off a road in Crest, plunged down a 200-foot embankment and caught fire, authorities said.

The crash occurred around 12:20 a.m. as the teen was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer eastbound on La Cresta Road, east of Ranch Gate Road. Officials said the man veered off the road for unknown reasons.

The driver, who was not identified, had to be extricated from the wreckage. He died before he could be taken to a hospital. CHP investigators said it is not known if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
