San Diego officials are warning people about the dangers of cliff diving after a 17-year-old boy seriously injured himself while jumping off Sunset Cliffs on Sunday.

The incident was captured on camera around 4:30 p.m. when the boy jumped off the ledge near Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and Froude Street in an attempt to land in the ocean below. Before he touched the water, his backside made contact with the cliff.
Videos show dozens of people watching the boy crash-land in the water.
Candace Hadley, a spokesperson for San Diego Fire-Rescue, said lifeguards and firefighters needed to use a technical rope system to pull him from the water.

He was then carried up the bluffs by medics and taken to a local hospital.
Hadley reminded people that cliff jumping is not only dangerous, but breaks a city law that prohibits jumping or diving into the Pacific Ocean or Mission Bay from any natural or human-made point connected to land that is more than 5 feet above the water.
“We want everyone to enjoy San Diego’s coastline safely and are asking locals and visitors to stay back from cliff edges, follow all posted warnings and never jump from cliffs or other elevated areas into the water,” Hadley said.
