San Diego police arrested a 36-year-old man Monday on suspicion of killing a man who interrupted a fight outside a Mount Hope apartment, officials said.

Hector Esquivel was being held in county jail without bail on one count of murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the deadly fight on Sunday just before 11 p.m., police said. Jail records also indicated he was on a federal hold, although no further information was available as to why.
Esquivel was located and arrested on H Street in Chula Vista around 3 p.m. Monday, police said.
Officers responded to a report of a person down on Island Avenue near 36th Street on Sunday night and found the 46-year-old victim lying on the ground suffering from blunt-force trauma to his head.

Paramedics took the man to a hospital, where he later died. The name of the man who died has not yet been released.
Police said the victim had stepped outside his apartment to interrupt a fight among four men — his nephew, who is in his 20s, another resident of the complex and two other individuals.
Police said the neighbor struck the victim at least twice with a blunt object before fleeing in a vehicle.
