Crowds are expected to turn out for the 54th annual Barona Powwow over Labor Day weekend on the Barona Indian Reservation in Lakeside.

The event Sept. 4-6 features Native American dance, art and food. Hundreds of Native American dancers from around the country are to compete during the three-day festival of Native American heritage and culture.
Dancers will perform traditional and contemporary dances ranging from the Fancy Shawl Dance to the Grass Dance. There will be hand drum contests, singing, drumming and grand entries in colorful regalia. Local and traveling vendors will sell a wide array of arts, crafts and handmade jewelry. Authentic Native American food such as Indian fry bread tacos will be sold.

Highlights include a 5k Fun Run starting at 7 a.m. on Sept. 5, gourd dancing at 6 p.m., Sept. 4, and 12:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Sept. 5-6, and Grand Entry at 8 p.m. on Sept. 4 and 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., Aug. 5-6, along with a 49-drum contest after the Saturday Sept. 5 evening session.
The powwow is at the Barona Sports Complex, 1095 Barona Road, about a mile north of the Barona Resort & Casino on Wildcat Canyon Road. Admission and parking are free.
