A bluff collapse Thursday and the potential for additional bluff failures resulted in the closure of Grandview Beach in Encinitas, city officials said.

The failure occurred around 5 p.m. on some of the bluff situated along the Encinitas coastline near Grandview Street and Neptune Avenue, said city spokesperson Jessica Gilera. No injuries were reported.
The size and scale of the failure were not immediately known.
City officials said access to Grandview Beach within 300 feet north and south of the staircase will be closed to public access.
“Please avoid the area and do not attempt to access the beach from this location,” city officials said on Instagram. “Crews are actively working to address the situation. Please follow all posted signs and instructions.”
Gilera said the collapse occurred on the north side of the staircase at Grandview Beach, which is under California State Parks’ control, while the south side is the responsibility of the city.

“With an abundance of caution, we are temporarily fencing off the access to the staircase at Grandview at the top and the bottom and posting signs at the areas of concern warning of bluff failures.”
Officials said access is still available to Beacons Beach and Ponto Beach.
Adam Young, a coastal geomorphologist at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography, said Friday that the cliff failure was one of the largest ones San Diego has seen this year.
“The Coastal Processes Group mapped the site this morning with a drone survey, and will be doing analysis on the data to examine the conditions before the failure, the exact size of the collapse and potential contributing factors,” Young said in a statement.
The collapse occurred near the same area where three people — a 35-year-old woman, her 65-year-old mother and her 62-year-old aunt — were fatally crushed in a bluff collapse during a family gathering at Grandview Beach in 2019.
