San Diego County is immersed in the “dog days of summer,” a phrase that refers to the hot, sultry weather that often occurs between early July and mid-August.

A dome of high pressure has settled over the region and will increase temperatures as the week goes along, the National Weather Service says.
San Diego’s daytime high is forecast to be 79 on Wednesday, 80 on Thursday and Friday, and 81 on Saturday and Sunday. The seasonal average is 75.
Temperatures will be closer to the mid-90s or above east of Interstate 15. It’s also possible that monsoonal moisture will spark lightning in East County late this week, raising the risk of wildfires.

Many people who live right on the coast could have trouble sleeping this week. The air isn’t going to cool off much at night due to the monsoon. The overnight lows along the beach will range from the upper 60s to low 70s.
Forecasters also say that high surf will again slam local beaches this week, with the biggest waves arriving on Thursday and Friday. The heavy swell is largely being caused by Hurricane Fausto off southwestern Mexico. It is sending wave energy to much of Southern California.
Waves will be in the 4- to 7-foot range, with some sets reaching 8 to 9 feet, forecasters say. There will be highly dangerous rip currents along the entire coastline of San Diego County.
