The bodies of a man and a dog were found in El Cajon early Saturday morning by firefighters responding to a house fire, according to Heartland Fire and Rescue officials.

Firefighters responded to 1433 Melody Lane around 2 a.m. Saturday, where arriving crews found the front of the house engulfed in flames. Due to a report of a potential victim still in the home, they entered the structure under “emergency rescue mode,” Heartland Fire spokesperson Andy McKellar said.
“Crews searched the home and unfortunately discovered the body of a deceased male. A deceased dog was also found in the dwelling,” McKellar said. “No other remains, or injured people, were found.”

A total of 17 fire personnel responded to the scene. The fire was knocked down about 15 minutes, at around 2:15 a.m., and appeared to have started in or near a bedroom, McKellar said. The cause was under investigation.
