Ham on Wry: $50,000 for a World Cup ticket? No thanks

Hope you too have been enjoying the World Cup, especially how well the U.S. did.

Of course that final loss to Belgium was a huge disappointment, but the better team did win.

Is it any consolation to recognize that the more talented team was the victor?

Sadly, no.

So that U.S. loss has left me looking forward to other wonderful things life has to offer.

“Like your delicious pizza,” I tell my bride. “What about making some for dinner?” I query.

“I’m a bit surprised, even somewhat disappointed,” she complained, “that before your love of family, you mention pizza.”

“My apologies,” I say. “Of course my family is astounding, but right after that is your pizza. Not to mention your fabulous eggplant parmesan, fettucine Alfredo, that delicious ravioli, lasagna, gnocchi, shrimp scampi, and your homemade cheesecake.”

“And where exactly do our children and grandkids fit in?’ she queries.

“Somewhere between the ravioli and lasagna,” I reply.

I trust she realized I was saying that in jest, but her expression suggested otherwise.

Notwithstanding that uncomfortable encounter, I was content to see what the Union-Tribune called “Another Miracle,” as Argentina rallied to defeat England with only minutes left.

After that U.S. loss, I was going to be OK with either team winning that semifinal to meet Spain on Sunday for the World Cup title, as both England’s Harry Kane and Argentina’s Lionel Messi were always huge favorites.

Argentina had been trailing 1-0 with just five minutes left in regulation time when they scored two goals to defeat England and face Spain for the championship.

It would be hard to argue against the fact that it was one of the most exciting games ever played.

According to the Internet, attendance to The World Cup final can cost over $50,000 for a single ticket, and that’s not counting travel cost, hotel and food.

A hot dog for that semifinal, for example, together with some chicken tenders was $38.

I guess that isn’t that much if you’re spending $50,000 for a ticket.

Why, I wonder, would anyone spend such a fortune to see the World Cup, with the added expense of travel, plus another fortune for food, when the game is on TV, with expert commentary, a pause button for bathroom breaks, all the snacks you’d want, and air conditioning, while costing a tiny fraction of what those fans in the sun are spending?

So I’ll be glued to the TV on Sunday, hoping that Argentina together with Lionel Messi can pull off yet another miracle to defeat Spain and emerge victorious.

If they lose, I’ll be disappointed, but I’ll be fine again in a few minutes after preparing a hot dog with some mustard and sauerkraut, together with a Coke, followed by a chocolate doughnut, while half the crowd of 82,000 will be taking a flight or driving home in tears, wondering why they spent such a fortune for losing tickets and a hot dog.
