An investigation was underway into how an 85-year-old woman found unresponsive inside her Encinitas home suffered injuries medical staff believed were suspicious, authorities said Monday.

The woman was found unresponsive Saturday inside her home on C Street between 13th and 14th streets, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. She was taken by ambulance to a hospital for further medical evaluation.
”While being treated at the hospital, medical staff discovered injuries they believed were suspicious in nature and notified law enforcement,” the sheriff’s statement said. The woman’s condition declined Sunday, sheriff’s officials said.

The Sheriff’s Homicide Unit was investigating due to the need to determine how the woman was injured, officials said.
