An 85-year-old man in San Diego police custody died at a hospital two days after he was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and domestic violence, sheriff’s officials said.

While being booked into jail Thursday, medical intake staff determined the man needed further evaluation, and he was taken to a hospital, said sheriff’s Lt. Juan Marquez.
The next day, his condition continued to decline, and he died Friday just before midnight. His name was not immediately released.

The man’s death is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office as part of a countywide agreement that agencies don’t investigate their own in-custody deaths.
The county Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the man’s cause and manner of death.
