From the Archives: Ahead of their time

Gilbert Aubrey Davidson stands with a group of women seated in electric cars at the Panama California Exposition in Balboa Park, circa 1915. The cars were called electriquettes. Davidson, founder of the Southern Trust and Commerce Bank, was president of the Chamber of Commerce. He came up with the idea of San Diego hosting an exposition and became known as “the father of the exposition.” The San Diego Union-Tribune historical photos are provided by the San Diego History Center.
