Passenger dies after two-vehicle collision in La Jolla

A man who was riding as a passenger in a Mitsubishi sedan died after the car collided with an SUV making a U-turn in La Jolla on Monday, San Diego police said.

The crash occurred at 2:30 p.m. when a 56-year-old man driving a Land Rover north on Torrey Pines Road made a U-turn, mid-block near Prospect Place, police said.

He turned into the path of the sedan, driven by a 68-year-old woman on Torrey Pines Road, and her car collided with the Land Rover, striking the front right side of the SUV, according to investigators.

Her passenger died before he could be taken to a hospital. His name was not immediately released.

The sedan’s driver suffered two broken arms, two femur fractures, a fractured pelvis and facial fractures. The SUV’s driver had reports of pain, investigators said.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, police said.

The collision is under investigation.
