A San Diego police officer shot and wounded a passenger in a suspected stolen vehicle at a San Ysidro apartment complex Wednesday morning, authorities said.
The passenger was shot in the torso. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries not considered to be life-threatening, sheriff’s homicide Lt. Juan Marquez said. Sheriff’s homicide detectives are investigating the shooting under a countywide agreement intended to keep law enforcement agencies from investigating their own agency’s shootings.
The shooting occurred during a “hot stop” on the suspected stolen vehicle shortly before 7:05 a.m. on Del Sur Boulevard near Beyer Boulevard. Police had approached the vehicle with guns drawn when the officer fired a shot, said San Diego police spokesperson Officer Colin Steinbroner.

According to Marquez, the shooting happened when the vehicle “drove in the direction of an officer.”
Additional officers arrived and provided medical aid to the injured passenger until paramedics arrived and took the passenger to a hospital.

The driver, a man, was detained and questioned about the vehicle, Marquez said.
