A 26-year-old man was arrested after police say he struck a pedestrian with his vehicle Tuesday night in Carlsbad, then fled the scene.

The crash occurred about 7:45 p.m. on Carlsbad Boulevard near Hemlock Avenue, according to Carlsbad police. Officers found the victim in the road with major injuries, and the person died at a hospital. The victim’s name was not released.
The driver fled after the crash, police said. The suspect vehicle, a Hyundai Sonata, was later found about a mile away with help from evidence left at the scene, community members, automated license plate readers and air support from other law enforcement agencies, police said.

That then helped lead police to the suspect, Fernando Saldana of Escondido, police said. Saldana, who has a prior conviction for DUI, was arrested on charges of murder, leaving the scene of a collision resulting in injury or death, DUI causing injury or death, and gross vehicular manslaughter, according to police.
