A semi-truck loaded with ice cream flipped on its side early Tuesday morning, slowing traffic on southbound Interstate 5 in Encinitas for hours, authorities said.

The crash occurred shortly after 5:50 a.m. near Encinitas Boulevard, the California Highway Patrol said on its online log. There was a small fuel leak, but it appeared to be contained to the traffic lane, the CHP said.
A traffic alert was issued shortly after 6 a.m. because the overturned truck and trailer were blocking several lanes, a CHP spokesperson said.

Shortly before 10:30 a.m., the CHP reported that the big rig had been uprighted.
By noon, the HOV lane and two insider lanes had been reopened. Other lanes were still shut down as workers cleaned up the roadway. Officials said that work could continue past 2 p.m.
Traffic maps indicated the slowdown on south I-5 started around Carlsbad.
There were no reported injuries, and it wasn’t clear what caused the crash, the spokesperson said.
