The incident began shortly before 1:15 a.m. when an 18-year-old driver for unknown reasons lost control and crashed her Infinity G37 coupe into the median on southbound I-5, south of Washington Street, the California Highway Patrol said.

The driver and her passenger both got out of the car, which was left disabled in traffic lanes.

A short time later, a 52-year-old man driving a black Toyota SUV ran into the vehicle and the passenger as she was standing on the freeway. The woman died before she could be taken to a hospital, officials said.
