An officer-involved shooting occurred shortly after a man threatened his mother and set fire to an apartment in downtown San Diego’s Cortez Hill neighborhood on Tuesday, San Diego police said.

The incident was first reported as an assault at an apartment complex on 6th Avenue near Cedar Street around 1:05 p.m., Officer Sarah Foster said.
When officers arrived, the suspect’s mother came out and cooperated with officers, Foster said. Her son reportedly barricaded himself inside the apartment and then began throwing items out a window, she said. A fire was also started inside the building.

At some point, an officer opened fire on the alleged suspect. Emergency personnel were seen doing chest compressions on a person who was taken away in an ambulance.
The suspect’s condition was not immediately known.
Firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze inside the building on the fourth floor, and the apartment complex was evacuated, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department posted on X.

The fire was extinguished as of 3 p.m., Foster said.
