More than 90 motorists were cited for alleged speeding violations, unsafe driving and other infractions during a traffic operation in Escondido on Monday, police said.

The operation resulted in the issuance of 93 citations for traffic law violations that qualify as “primary collision factors,” or infractions that commonly lead to crashes, police said.
The citations were issued for violations that included speeding, not adhering to traffic signs and signals, unsafe turning movements, use of cellphones and driving without a license.
During the citywide operation between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m., 96 motorists were contacted during the operation, and all but three received tickets, police said.
“Preventing crashes and promoting safe travel for everyone remain top priorities for the Escondido Police Department,” Escondido police Chief Ken Plunkett said in a statement. “We encourage all drivers to stay alert and use caution every time they get behind the wheel.”

Officials said funding for the operation was provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Escondido police were awarded $462,000 in grant money this year to fund the primary collision factor operation, to staff DUI checkpoints throughout the year and to pay for a DUI officer who does exclusive DUI enforcement.
The Escondido Police Department is planning to conduct additional targeted enforcement details in the near future but did not specify exact dates.
The department conducted a similar operation in April and announced officers had issued 91 citations.
