Residents in a north Oceanside neighborhood were asked to shelter in place, a main street was closed and hazardous materials crews were called in after several items deemed suspicious were found Sunday morning, Oceanside fire officials said.

At about 10:15 a.m. someone reported suspicious packages near Castellano Way and Vandegrift Drive, the department said. Fire crews arrived and found “multiple” such items.
A stretch of Vandegrift — a thoroughfare to Camp Pendleton’s San Luis Rey gate, colloquially known as the back gate — was closed to traffic, and Oceanside police issued a traffic alert. Shelter-in-place orders were issued for residents in the 700 block of Arthur Drive and the 4900 block of El Mirlo Drive, fire officials said. Both are in residential neighborhoods that run parallel to Vandegrift on its east side.

Oceanside fire and police officials established a joint command. Hazmat crews from Camp Pendleton and San Diego Fire-Rescue Department were called in to assist, as was the Sheriff’s Office’s Bomb/Arson Unit. The county Department of Environmental Health and Quality also responded.
