The deadline to file candidacy paperwork to run for the District 3 Encinitas City Council seat will be extended to Friday, Aug. 12, because the incumbent in the race is not seeking re-election.

By late Friday, Aug. 7, one person — Ed Sprague — had returned the competed candidacy paperwork. A second person — Arielle Golden — had picked up the paperwork, but not yet returned it, the City Clerk’s office said.
Sprague is a retired firefighter and a former Olivenhain Municipal Water District board member, while Golden has a background in food supply and previously served on the California Food Policy Council.
The current District 3 representative, Councilmember Joy Lyndes, announced earlier this year that she would step down at the end of her term. District 3 primarily covers the Cardiff region.
In addition to the District 3 position, the Nov. 3 election ballots in Encinitas will include the mayor and City Council District 4 spots. Since the incumbents in both those races have filed their candidacy paperwork, the filing deadline for those races concluded Friday afternoon.

Incumbent Mayor Bruce Ehlers turned in his completed paperwork Friday, while challenger Rimga Viskanta returned hers Tuesday, the City Clerk’s office said. Ehlers is a former City Council member and a former planning commissioner. Viskanta is a San Dieguito Union High School District board member and a former Encinitas Union School District board member.
Both the incumbent District 4 council member, Marco San Antonio, and challenger Brad Lefkowits returned their paperwork Thursday. San Antonio is a sign business owner and a former Olivenhain Water District Board member, while Lefkowits is one of the founders of the Parents of Encinitas Union School District community group and chair of the city’s Urban Forest Advisory Committee.
