A fast-moving wildfire quickly charred 132 acres in the Campo area Monday afternoon, briefly prompting evacuations before crews stopped the fire’s spread.

All evacuation orders — which included the community of Live Oak Springs — and warnings were lifted by early Monday evening, and crews were able to draw a containment line around about 5% of the fire footprint.
The fire, reported around 2 p.m. on Church Road south of Old Highway 80, initially spread at a “dangerous” rate of speed before crews were able to halt its progress, according to Cal Fire Capt. Joshua Cormode.
“Honestly, (this was) such a great stop with how the fire was moving initially,” he said. “The collaboration between air and ground resources is really what stomped this fire out.”

He said more than 150 firefighters were assigned to the incident, and many would remain at the scene through the night to extinguish hot spots and continue drawing a containment line.
The fire also prompted a smoke advisory for nearby communities, including Boulevard, Manzanita and McCain Valley.
