The shooting was reported shortly after 8:45 p.m. near the intersection of Steiner Drive and Higgins Street, a short distance from Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center. Witnesses told police they heard between six and nine gunshots followed by the sound of two vehicles speeding away.
The 36-year-old man who was shot drove himself and his passenger to a hospital to be treated, police said. The 28-year-old woman, who had been shot once, died at the hospital, police said. The man suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was reported to be stable.
The name of the woman who died was not immediately released. Both victims were from Chula Vista.
The driver told police he had pulled to the curb on Steiner near Higgins when another vehicle pulled alongside him and someone fired several rounds into the vehicle, according to investigators.
