A new tropical storm is developing off southwestern Mexico and is likely to curve west-southwest late Friday, raising the possibility that it will funnel lots of moisture toward Southern California, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The storm, which has been named Norbert, will gradually gain strength over the next several days, forecasters said. The system appears to be similar to Marie, the hurricane that produced intense heat, big waves and wild winds in San Diego County.
Marie also contributed to serious beach erosion in Carlsbad, and it generated surf that damaged oceanfront homes in Orange and Los Angeles counties.

Tropical storms often curl toward Southern California before turning west and dying at sea. Marie unfolded that way, but only after it tracked unusually far to the west-northwest, gaining position to funnel moisture into California.
