Deputies responded to a report around 6:50 p.m. of a man causing a disturbance on Calle El Potrero, west of state Route 76, police said. Glenn Oliveri, 64, a Pauma Valley resident, was apparently under the influence of drugs and was arrested without force, police said.

When the deputies arrived at the Vista jail, they found Oliveri unresponsive in the patrol car. Vista fire paramedics performed life-saving measures and then transported him to a hospital. He later died.

Information about his cause and manner of death was not released.

The San Diego police homicide unit was called to conduct an investigation, per a countywide agreement that prevents agencies from investigating their own in-custody deaths.

The District Attorney’s Office will determine if the deputy involved bears any responsibility, police said.
