Officers received a report around 10:25 p.m. of an encampment fire on 45th Street near Logan Avenue, acting Lt. David Garren said. When police arrived, they found a large fire on the sidewalk and a man suffering from severe burns.

He was taken to a hospital, where he died. His name was not released pending notification of his family.

Investigators from the Metro Arson Strike Team responded and determined the fire had been intentionally set, Garren said. Witnesses reported seeing a man in his 60s leaving the area as the fire began, the investigator said.
