HAHS is dedicated to preserving sites that were the homes and working studios of American artists. The Ilan Lael Foundation joins 93 sites across 32 states that are part of the program. The foundation is located at the former home of Hubbell in the unincorporated East County community of Santa Ysabel, just outside of Julian.

Hubbell, who passed away in May 2024, was an iconic San Diegan sculptor, artist, naturalist and peace advocate whose home has gained interest from the international art community. His sculptures and stained-glass works were organically inspired and rooted in Hubbell’s belief that art and nature exist in harmony with one another. His ethereal home, which utilizes found natural materials, has been described as “habitable sculptures” that are known to resemble Hobbit houses from the “Lord of the Rings.”

“We are beyond honored to have received this designation that will help us continue to commemorate Jim’s legacy,” said a statement from Marianne Gerdes, executive director at the Ilan Lael Foundation. “Since his passing, we have strived to uphold his belief that art and nature work harmoniously. The property has always been the best hidden gem of San Diego, and now the recognition helps us to share the magic with the public.”

The HAHS program is part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and describes itself as the only national organization focused on presenting site-specific narratives of American art history. The organization unites experts in visitor programming, historic preservation and community engagement.

Since Hubbell’s passing, the Ilan Lael Foundation has shared his home through year-round tours and exhibitions at the San Diego International Airport and Oceanside Museum of Art, including the current exhibit “Brothers in Arts: James Hubbell and Bert Hubbell.” The foundation also partners with the University of California San Diego, Palomar College and the Julian Union School District to offer educational programs.
